2008 VMAs: Better With Commentary

The 2008 VMAs aired live last night on MTV, much to the joy of the fourteen or so people who enjoy watching pointless award shows.

What I find more interesting than actual award shows are the liveblogs of those events. It's a unique trend of journalism in that it is not only a play-by-play report of what is happening, but also a strongly opinionated and often mocking commentary of social phenomena.

The livebloggers I followed last night were Prefix Magazine, Rolling Stone magazine, the blog Idolator, twitter user @sooz5, and (retroactively) the Best Week Ever blog.

I liveblogged casually as well via twitter, knowing that a few of my friends were watching and commenting alongside me. There were several times when my comments more than mirrored the other livebloggers I was following; I thought it was interesting given the controversy created by "mainstream" media where they are believed to be more credible sources of news and commentary than the common individual. or, because they essentially have more authority than the common individual.

If only all award shows could be as classy as the 1984 Grammy's. You don't need ridiculous sets or pathetic 'illusion' themes; what you need is a girl with a voice to bring down the heavens, a lot of hair and even more stage presence.
